Incentives

Did you know that many grocery stores in the United States already offer incentives for you to remember your reusable bags? Here's what some stores in Arizona are doing....

Frys: Offers $.05 off for every reusable
bag you use instead of plastic.

Trader Joes: Has a weekly drawing you can enter
to win a $25 gift card when you bring your
reusable bags

IKEA: Charges $.05 per plastic bag.

Whole Foods: Will be banning plastic bags all together.

What about the stores where you live? What other stores can we add to our list? We wrote letters to all the major grocery stores asking them to provide stronger incentives to help reduce the use of plastic. We'll see what happens, but hopefully this list will get larger.

  3. You definitely have to purchase bags at Aldi's (a discount grocer).

I lived in England about 20 years ago, and you had to by bags there back then... I've always tried to take my own since moving back to the States in the '90s. The trick is getting me to put the bags in my car after I empty them, rather than folding them neatly and putting them in the space between fridge and wall...

When I forget (often), and end up getting plastic bags, that's what I use as bin liners for the waste baskets.

Also, here in Pittsburgh, the recycling trucks take things away in blue plastic bags from grocery stores. We sort our own -- plastic and glass in one, tins in another.
